Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]

What is DIY fundraising?
DIY (short for "do-it-yourself") fundraising is a chance for you to get creative and add your own flair to supporting IOCC. Our DIYers set up a personal page or start teams and work to raise funds and awareness about IOCC's global humanitarian work. Get started here

How did IOCC's DIY campaign start?
Our very first DIY initiative was called Race to Respond and took place in 2002. Five dedicated IOCC supporters led by Jim Angelus made history by riding their bikes cross country to raise awareness and funds for IOCC's worldwide humanitarian work. This was the beginning of volunteer-led fundraising, which today everyone can participate in.

We invite you to become an IOCC DIY supporter—in a way that reflects your unique personality and talents. The efforts of a few individuals can make a world of difference!

I live outside the United States. Can I still participate?
Yes! Through the wonders of the Internet, you can join IOCC's DIY team and fundraise no matter where you are in the world. We will help you get started by creating your own fundraising page, which you can personalize and share with your network.

What about donating from overseas?
Again, yes! Please be aware that some of our supporters overseas have experienced difficulty donating using their non-US credit or debit cards, even with MasterCard or Visa. We suggest that you check with your bank to confirm that online transactions of this kind are permitted using your card, and when entering payment information, please ensure that all name and address information matches that on record exactly. If your bank does not allow the transaction, you can pay via PayPal instead.

How do I support a friend or family member who's raising money?
Visit our DIY homepage and search for your friend or family member by name. You can support an individual or a team; it's up to you. If you'd prefer to remain anonymous, be sure to tick that box!

Can I or my business become a sponsor?
Yes, sponsorships are available for individuals and businesses. Check out our sponsorship page.

Can I designate my campaign or gift to a specific IOCC project?
IOCC's DIY campaigns support the area of greatest need. Because needs are constantly in flux around the world, this is the best way to help the most people. IOCC staff on the ground continuosly monitor and assess needs, so you can be sure that your gift will go where it is needed most.

Which DIY campaign should I choose?
Choose what suits your style and goal! Want to encourage donations instead of birthday or wedding gifts? Celebrate a Milestone. Are you taking on an athletic challenge for a cause? Miles that Matter. Do you want to remember or honor someone special in your life? That's Honor and Memorial. And if you have a brilliant idea that doesn't fit these categories, like a dance-a-thon, virtual lemonade stand, or karaoke sing-off, Choose Your Own—and make your creative vision a means of helping others.

What is Race to Respond?
In 2002, five dedicated IOCC supporters led by Jim Angelus made history by riding their bikes cross country to raise awareness and funds for IOCC's worldwide humanitarian work.
