As podo progresses throughout one's body, lower extremities become more and more swollen, causing an itchy and burning sensation. The only way to eliminate this from happening is by wearing shoes and making sure feet are clean after having contact with silicate-rich soil. In an effort to help eliminate podoconiosis in Ethiopia, IOCC works with health centers to teach others how to properly clean their feet. Your symbolic gift of $1,000 is enough for IOCC to install a water tank at a health center—where water is crucial to treating podo.
