Syria-Turkey Earthquake Response

The devastating earthquakes that struck Syria and Turkey in February took the lives of tens of thousands of men, women, and children. They also destroyed vital infrastructure and resources, including hospitals.

IOCC immediately coordinated with our longtime Church partner in Syria to help survivors in the disaster’s early days—assessing needs and determining the most effective response. Emergency aid to meet urgent needs got underway swiftly, and assistance now includes psychosocial support for displaced children and families as they cope with trauma and loss.

In Turkey, IOCC conducted a rapid needs assessment across the quake-affected zone, particularly Hatay, and coordinated with the local Orthodox Church and in-country partners. Initial response included work to provide emergency food and other basics to Turkish families and Syrian refugees affected by the earthquakes. The program has since expanded to provide temporary residences for displaced families while they complete repairs on their own homes, plus financial assistance so they can meet basic household needs in the meantime.
